Today, network technology plays a vital role in how businesses operate. The ability to share data and resources efficiently and securely is essential for productivity and competitiveness. However, managing and expanding network infrastructure can be costly. This is where VXLAN comes in, a technology that not only improves network efficiency but also offers significant financial advantages.
VXLAN , which stands for “Virtual eXtensible Local Area Network,” is a network protocol used to create virtual networks and segment traffic in data center and enterprise network environments. VXLAN was developed to address the limitations of traditional networks in an increasingly virtualized and cloud-oriented world.
Some limitations of a data center managed with a traditional network include:
- Lack of Flexibility: Classic routing often requires manual and static configurations, which can be problematic in environments that require constant reconfiguration due to new applications or changes in network topology.
- Limited Scalability: Manual route management can become complicated as the infrastructure grows, making network management difficult in large-scale environments.
- Long Convergence Times: In the event of failures, traditional networks can take time to converge and redirect traffic, causing significant downtime in critical applications.
- Lack of Active Redundancy: They generally do not offer true high availability, as they do not provide active redundancy.
Advantages of using VXLAN in the Data Center:
- Scalability: VXLAN can support a large number of segment identifiers, which is critical in companies with a high number of virtual machines and containers, facilitating the management of the constantly growing network.
- Workload migration: VXLAN enables virtual machine mobility within the infrastructure without the need to change virtual machine IP addresses, reducing long convergence times and enabling active redundancy.
- Physical layer independence: VXLAN encapsulates packets in UDP packets, allowing virtual networks to run on top of existing physical network infrastructure without requiring changes to network hardware.
- Hybrid cloud environment compatibility: VXLAN is commonly used in hybrid cloud environments to extend the network and maintain consistency between on-premises and cloud resources.
- Automation, Orchestration, Flexibility and Reduction of Manual Errors: VXLAN can be used in conjunction with software-defined networking (SDN) technologies, providing greater flexibility, automation, orchestration and error reduction in network management.
For the implementation of multiple flavor solutions with Cisco:
- NXOS Configuration: This method involves manually configuring VXLAN settings on Nexus switches, giving full control over the configuration, but being a bit more cumbersome.
- Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI): ACI provides a more abstract, policy-based approach to network configuration. With ACI, you define application-centric policies, and the underlying network configuration is automatically generated based on those policies. This approach is highly automated and simplifies VXLAN configuration for application-centric networks.
Both are scalable and facilitate migration by following a clear and defined plan.
Taking into account the information presented above, there is nothing left to fear regarding changes in the Data Center. It is time to implement them and proceed to facilitate control, redundancy, scalability, and response times, leveraging the growth of the infrastructure, whether on-premises or in the cloud.
VXLAN NX-OS only using edge equipment for interconnection of 2 or multiple DCs.

This can grow to include a full VXLAN implementation in both data centers.
